Advanced FASTRAM AST Part Number 202253-001

The Advanced FASTRAM is a flexible, high-speed memory enhancement product
designed exclusively for use in the AST Premium/286. This board installs
in one of two fASTslots on the Premium/286 system board, and offers from
512K to 8Mbytes of system memory, using either 256K or 1024K SIMMs. Speed
requirements for the SIMMs are 100NS. The Advanced FASTRAM fully supports
the following memory standards: Conventional (Base 640), Extended, EEMS
Expanded, LIM 3.2 Expanded, and LIM 4.0 Expanded.

Configuration of this product is achieved primarily through "Smart Switch"
software. Without the proper utilities, it is not really possible to use
this board. The AST Part Number for the Advanced FASTRAM Utilities Disk is
910314-001.

MEMORY CONFIGURATION

The Advanced FASTRAM has four banks for the installation of memory, with
each bank accepting two 256K or 1024K SIMM modules. A memory bank may NOT
be partially filled (one SIMM). If both 256K and 1024K SIMMs are used,
the 256K modules must be in banks 0 and 1, and the 1024K modules in bank 3
or banks 3 and 4. A matrix of valid combinations appears below:

        BANK0 BANK1 BANK2 BANK3 TOTAL MEMORY
        ----- ----- ----- ----- --------------
         512K - - - 512K (0.5 MB)
         512K 512K - - 1024K (1.0 MB)
         512K 512K 512K - 1536K (1.5 MB)
         512K 512K 512K 512K 2048K (2.0 MB)
        2048K - - - 2048K (2.0 MB)
         512K 512K 2048K - 3072K (3.0 MB)
        2048K 2048K - - 4096K (4.0 MB)
         512K 512K 2048K 2048K 5120K (5.0 MB)
        2048K 2048K 2048K - 6144K (6.0 MB)
        2048K 2048K 2048K 2048K 8192K (8.0 MB)

        NOTE: 512K = TWO 256K SIMM MODULES
             2048K = TWO 1024K SIMM MODULES

JUMPERS

    E0/E1 - FACTORY TEST

    Leave the E1 position attached

    E2/E4 - BOARD IDENTIFIER

The Premium/286 will accept one or two Advanced FASTRAM boards. The first
installed board should remain in default (E4 jumpered; E2 open). If a
second Advanced FASTRAM is installed, identify it as the second board by
moving the jumper from E4 to E2. *NOTE* This jumper only applies to the
Advanced FASTRAM. If the original FastRam is in your Premium/286, and an
Advanced FASTRAM is added, leave it identified as the first (E4 jumpered).

    E3 - INSTALL CONFIGURATION

When a jumper is installed at E3, the Advanced FASTRAM configuration is
set as all EMS expanded memory. Removing this jumper resets the memory
configuration to 512K linear memory starting at address 0000h. Because
the Premium/286 is designed for all memory to be installed in the
fASTslots, the E3 jumper must be removed if the Advanced FASTRAM is the
only memory adapter in the system. After initial installation, the
configuration can be adjusted with the "smart switch" software.

NOTE: E3 is a "toggle switch". If the jumper is removed to create Base
Memory, and then the configuration is changed with the software,
replacing the E3 jumper (after power-down) will toggle the first
          512K back to Base Memory.
